“Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.”
The human mind absorbs everything. Although we may not be able to recall all that it absorbs at times; believe that every piece of information we come across is in there. I like to watch a show called Brain Games. This show reveals to viewers how the human brain process information while helping viewers to look at information differently. The show often gather random individuals to participate in demonstrations that will get their brains thinking. Many of the demonstrations are designed to see how the individual thinks. Usually the majority of participants will think alike. Sometimes the majority is wrong and sometimes the majority is correct. Did I just throw you off by using the word “correct”? You may have thought I was going to use the word “right” since we are accustomed to pair “right” and “wrong” together.
Today’s text is one of my favorites. It speaks about changing the way we think so that we can know what God wants for our lives. Many of us were reared on BET, MTV, VH1, and all other forms of media. They taught us how to select a date, what kind of house to buy, what kind of car to drive, what kind of language to use, how to have fun, and so on. It’s amazing how much media guides our thinking and we don’t even know it. Advertisers spend billions of dollars just to get us to buy into what they are selling. They’re good at what they do because the majority of us buy. We have been conditioned to think like media has taught us to for so long that any other way of thinking seems bizarre, old fashion or just plain wrong.
Have you ever thought that the way you get into dating relationships are all wrong? If you think having sex in a dating relationship is harmless then your thinking is all wrong. Have you ever thought that the way you view money is all wrong? If you don’t have savings or if you have debt for any purpose then your thinking is all wrong. Sex in a dating relationship or having debt is the normal way of thinking today. What if I tell you that neither one of these are good or pleasing to God?
A new way of thinking will help us navigate dating relationships that are good and pleasing to God. A new way of thinking will help us select our words that are good and pleasing to God. A new way of thinking will help us see money differently. A new way of thinking will change our LIVES FOREVER.
The new way of thinking can only come through God. I challenge you to rethink the way that you are so accustomed to thinking. Yes, even “good” debt. (Look for my blog on finances coming out soon.) How can we change the way we think? Start here. Ask God this: “Is every decision I make good and pleasing to you?” Ask God this before each decision you make no matter how “small” or “large” you think the decision is. When we begin to inquire of God on all decisions we begin to understand our purpose and walk in our purpose.
Changing the way we think will be easy for some things but more of a process for other things. Don’t despair. God will change you when you allow Him to. #LivingTheLife
